In this post I’d like to answer a question that I think a lot of people may have when visiting Aliexpress for the first time …
Is It Worth Buying Clothes On Aliexpress?
The prices are so low that it’s only natural if you wonder if the quality is ok, or if it’s something that will fall apart after one wear. A lot of things are cheaper than what you’d find at low budget/fast fashion store like H&M or Forever 21.
I think I’ve bought enough things on Aliexpress to safely say YES: yes, you can find nice/good quality things on Aliexpress.
Disclaimer: not everything on Aliexpress is good. I’ve discovered that it’s best to take your time and do your research before hitting the ‘buy now’ button. And when I say do your research, I mean read the reviews. As many as you can. They will give you the best idea of the product. Shoppers tend to be brutally honest, and may also post pictures.
Keep in mind that Aliexpress is not one big online store. It’s made up of thousands of stores (like eBay or Etsy), and some will be better than others. It’s the shoppers that will let you know which ones are good.
Pretty straight forward, but you’re probably still wondering why the prices are so low. I’ll let you in on a little secret: clothing isn’t really that expensive.
There are luxury fabrics like cashmere, but common fabrics like cottons and synthetics are pretty cheap. If you go to a fabric store, you’ll see. In high school I took sewing and made a wool jacket for about $30, something that could have easily retailed for over $100. Also, most things are produced in bulk, which lowers the cost further.
I’ve worked in the clothing wholesale and retail industries for over 5 years and I’ve seen how things are priced (I even got to do pricing on my own). Clothing in brick-and-mortar stores end up being marked up A LOT by the time it gets to the sales floor.
- A designer goes to China, buys a basic t-shirt for about $1-2, embellishes it, and adds their logo.
- They add in all the other costs involved in the design process, plus their profit margin and price the t-shirt at $25.
- Then they sell it to an importer. The importer adds the costs of bringing the goods in (shipping, tariffs, freight), plus their profit margin and other expenses like staff salaries (it’s quite the formula). The t-shirt now wholesales for $50.
- A retailer will buy it, and the process repeats of adding in their profit margin. Finally, the consumer will pay $110. Retailers hardly ever use a 50% markup anymore.
So with Aliexpress, you’re basically just paying for goods at their true cost. And you don’t even have to wait for sale season! That’s how I think of shopping on Aliexpress, in any case.
Here are my personal favourite items from Aliexpress/the ones I was most impressed with quality-wise. Some of these items honestly look better than more expensive ($100+) items I have in my closet!
